Hyundai has launched the Re:Style 2020 collection, which is made from upcycled, repurposed car parts that would have otherwise ended up in a landfill, not being included in a recycling program. This is the second year it’s launching one such capsule collection, with the difference that this one is smaller and won’t be seen at any major Fashion Week event. Because 2020 has put a damper on all large public gatherings.

Consequently, Re:Style 2020 will premiere online, with items available starting October 13 at London’s Selfridges pop-up store and the Selfridges online store. In case you’re wondering what could possibly be so fancy as to be sold by Selfridges, since we’re talking about used car parts, know that, for this capsule collection, Hyundai brought on board several trendy fashion brands like Alighieri, E.L.V. DENIM, Public School, pushBUTTON, Richard Quinn and Rosie Assoulin.

The collection includes statement jewelry (chockers, bracelets and earrings), a denim jumpsuit, a couple of vests, a corset, and a very chic handbag, all of them made from materials that would have otherwise been thrown away like seatbelts, airbags and seat fabrics. The goal of the collection is to highlight sustainable fashion by upcycling discarded materials from the automotive manufacturing process. So while it won’t actually make a significant difference in terms of pollution (given the small number of items made), it stands as a powerful statement on what can be done if there’s a will – and an encouragement to others to follow suit.

“At Hyundai Motor, we understand that ethical consumption and caring for the environment are increasingly important considerations of our customers,” says Wonhong Cho, Executive Vice President and Global Chief Marketing Officer. “Through Re:Style 2020 we want to offer another way Hyundai Motor can help customers enjoy the sustainable lifestyle they aspire to. By demonstrating that discarded resources can be reimagined into valuable products, Hyundai Motor encourages more industries to see waste as a recreative opportunity and to work collaboratively toward an environmentally accountable and economically efficient future.”
