The moment of truth has come, it’s time to see what kind of power the BMW S55 engine makes in real life and leave the specs the company gave us behind.

As you probably already know, if you’re a BMW aficionado, the German company developed a habit of publishing lower figures than what their cars actually make. While most manufacturers will tell you the amount of power the engine of your car makes at the flywheel, the Munichers will tell you just how much your car has at the wheels.

Since the transmission usually takes out around 10-15% (on modern cars) of the power by the time it reaches the wheel, a discrepancy appears between what you can actually use and what an engine is capable of.

However, it’s all to our benefit. The more power you get at the wheels, the better. Since the F80 M3 is an important car for everyone, not just BMW fans, the guys from European Auto Source got it on a dyno track as soon as they got their hands on one.

The result can be seen in the video below. The car managed to post 425 WHP and 425 lb-ft (576 Nm) of WTQ, numbers better than expected. BMW claims that the S55 engine makes 431 HP and 406 lb-ft (550 Nm) of torque at the flywheel.

Our separate measurement here says that it actually makes around 470 HP and 470 lb-ft (637 Nm) of torque at the flywheel. The discrepancy is well within BMW’s usual limits.

So, now that you know the truth, are you still interested in buying a 2015 M3 or is it a deal breaker? Let us tell you what is truly a deal breaker: the exhaust.

You can hear it in the video below through the entire rev range and it doesn’t seem impressive enough. Sure, it sounds OK but a car like the M3 shouldn’t be just OK, it should make everyone around say ‘WOW’. In that regard, Akrapovic might have the solution for you.

The Slovakians Slovenians just teased us with a couple of photos of their new exhaust for the M3 and M4 models and now, we also have a video of how their system sounds like. It’s not the perfect quality but you’ll get a clue of what it’s like. Check it out below and let us know what you think.
