Four years after Apple launched CarPlay, the standard is now running Waze as an alternative to Maps. Four years, ladies and gentlemen, you’ve heard that right! Adding insult to injury, Waze arrived on Android Auto in July 2017.
Launched today on more than 400 models, Waze on Apple CarPlay can be enjoyed on vehicles ranging from the Abarth 595 and Acura TLX to the Volkswagen Jetta and Volvo XC40. Compatible devices with at least iOS 7.1 need either Bluetooth or USB connectivity to project the mobile app on the infotainment system.

Features include Route Overview, Home, Work, and Favorites, Reporting, and Alerts. To set up Apple CarPlay, don’t forget to active Siri before connecting your iPhone to the vehicle. Holding down the voice-command button on the steering wheel while saying what you need is the biggest benefit of Siri in conjunction with Waze.

Waze has more than 100 million active users worldwide, coming from 185 countries. Another interesting statistic is that the average monthly distance driven by Waze users is 10.5 kilometers, which means that the majority of users don’t own a car or don’t drive often.

Waze came to be in 2006 from FreeMap Israel. After a few rounds of funding, the app was purchased by Google for $966 million. According to the Mountain View-based company, 100 employees involved in the project at that point received an average of $1.2 million.

On a related note, do remember that Apple CarPlay isn’t as widely available as Waze. As of September 2018, the phone mirroring standard is available on select vehicles sold in 36 markets. Coincidence or not, these markets are the most lucrative for the Cupertino-based behemoth.

In alphabetical order, these markets are Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Republic of Korea, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, the UK, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States of America.
