One of the best things about the Waze navigation app is that it provides users with alerts whenever they are approaching the location of a user-submitted report, and these include everything from speed traps and potholes to traffic jams and accidents.
In fact, this is what made Waze so popular across the world, as it’s running on community reports that keep everything up-to-date and, at some level, fairly accurate.
But as some discovered recently, the latest version of the app, and it turns out the most recent beta too, is experiencing an issue that breaks down the alert system.
More specifically, when you’re driving with Waze on the screen, the app no longer announces the reports, including speed cameras and road hazards. According to users who turned to reddit to signal the bug, Waze still announces turns and everything else just fine, only that it sometimes forgets to provide audio alerts for the incoming reports.
As someone explains in the linked thread, this more or less makes Waze pretty useless, as the audio warnings are essential in some cases and also reduce distraction overall. On a motorcycle, for example, keeping eyes on the road and just listening to whatever the navigation app is saying is what most riders do, so a bug breaking down this feature isn’t really the best news.
A beta user running the latest Waze preview build confirms the glitch isn't limited to the stable version, so most likely, it’s something that the Google-owned company needs to fix in all releases of the app. The company is yet to publicly acknowledge it, but given it’s happening everywhere, we should expect some fixes rather sooner than later.
In the meantime, Waze has recently resolved a major issue on CarPlay that broke down volume control in the car, and iPhone users are recommended to update to the latest version as soon as possible.
