The electric revolution is coming for the world of water sports, and a first step in that direction has been a wider array of choices for eFoils. A new eFoil has been launched internationally and it brings something new to the table: affordability.
eFoils are not cheap, but this one is (sort of): Waydoo is introducing the Flyer One at a price point that is bound to blow competition out of the water (sorry, couldn’t help it). Whereas similar products are in the $10,000-$12,000 range, this one stars at a little under $5,000. If you’re a true believer, you might get it even cheaper than that.

Flyer One is now crowdfunding on KickStarter, with early pledgers being offered the chance to grab one for a starting price of $3,795, a comparative steal. This eFoil is meant as a more affordable option to the Flyer Waydoo launched last year, and is meant as the epitome of accessible luxury in terms of water sports.

The fact that it promises to be a high-quality product isn’t hurting its chances, either. As of the time of press, Waydoo has secured more than 14 times the goal amount – and they still have 27 more days in the campaign.

So what is Flyer One exactly? For laymen, it’s a surfboard-type of device that’s powered by an electric motor, with a hydrofoil that literally allows the rider to soar above the water. It can go pretty fast, it’s got good range and can be used both as a board and as an eFoil, and most importantly, it’s suitable for both beginners and pro users.

Consisting of several pieces that take only minutes to put together, the Flyer One is made of EPP foam and aluminum, carbon fiber and carbon composite. It packs a IP67 waterproof battery cell that attaches to the board with a simple push, and measures 68 x 28 x 43 in (173 x 69.5 x 109 cm). Including the battery, it weighs 62 pounds (28 kg) and comes with a maximum load of 220 pounds (100 kg).

The 6-kW motor delivers a top speed of 25 mph (42 kph), with riders being able to choose whichever of the 24 available speeds available for their needs and current state of training. It goes without saying, beginners are not to go straight to 24.

The battery delivers an estimated ride time between 55 and 85 minutes, which Waydoo says it’s roughly 22 miles (35 km). Charging takes only two hours, but for experienced riders, there’s always the possibility of using a swapping replacement.

Riders control the Flyer One through the Jet One Controller, a Bluetooth handheld remote. It comes with an OLED display that offers stats like speed, battery info and the option to choose a preferred speed. The Jet One Controller also connects to a dedicated app, allowing riders to later retrace their routes and, Waydoo says, relive all the fun they just had on the water.

Cliches aside, Flyer One is designed with a varied target audience in mind. In addition to the 24-speed option, Waydoo offers an optional inflatable pod for those who’ve never set foot on an eFoil before, as well as various customization options, like differently sized masts and fins. Plus, it can be ridden like a board or eFoil, standing or posing, or in whichever position the rider favors.

The eFoil can also double as exterior propulsion to a regular dinghy, so there’s that for getting the most bang out of your hard-earned bucks.

Waydoo’s Flyer One promises unprecedented amounts of fun, with a hefty dose of safety considerations. “Experience breathtaking moments as you glide across the water. Feel the sensation of flying,” Waydoo says.

“Remarkably powerful, the Flyer ONE utilizes a highly sophisticated design with unparalleled features at an unbeatable price. We’ve developed the one-of-a-kind Flyer ONE with a robust electric propulsion system and slip-resistant textured carbon fiber. Fast, quiet, and emission-free, the Flyer ONE creates the ultimate flying experience,” Waymoo continues.

Well, except for actual flying. But Waymoo is right: at this price, it’s the most affordable eFoil on the market and, by the looks of things, water adventurers are taking notice.
