An unmanned vehicle that will detect land mines and destroys them is one of the 800 projects that have been submitted for the event. The creators of this particular drone said the device would “make the world a better place to live” through its use of smart technology, and we can't agree more.

But that is far from being the only interesting UAVs that will race for the big prize. Drones that can deliver packages, plant trees, clear fog in areas such as airports and others that can improve slums across the world are also included. In fact the event is quite a big deal, since there are over 57 countries, including Spain, the US and India taking part.

The award was launched last year in February, during the second Government Summit, by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the vice president and prime minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai. According to Mohammed Abdullah Al Gergawi, the minister of Cabinet Affairs, the award aims to promote innovation around the world by encouraging the use of technology to improve people’s lives.

Henri, a waterproof quadcopter used in Haiti to map reefs and costal zone that cand land and take off from water and survey habitats above and below water is another of the examples that drones could ease our existence. Other projects that are subscribed have the potential to improve healthcare, education, civil defense, transport and communications and humanitarian assistance.

The winners of the award will be announced in February after live demonstrations by inventors in front of a panel of judges will take place.
