Watch the Nurburgring-Crashed 2015 Corvette Z06 Returning to the US

Obviously, there’s no official confirmation for this, but the damage shown on the car in this piece of footage matches that sustained by the Nordschleife-crashed ‘Vette.

The most likely scenario is that the Chevry was flown back home, landing at the Chicago O’Hare International Airport. The clip shows the Z06 on the back of a platform, wafting around as it was making its way home.

Now about that accident

The Corvette Z06 crashed while taking one of the Hatzenbach corners on the ‘Ring. This is actually a three-bend section of the Nordschleife, whose turns vary in radius and also include elevation changes. You have Hatzenback I that sees you going downhill, Hatzenbach II, which is a constant radius turn and Hatzenbach III with its late apex tricks. To put it another way, it’s an area that catches many cars out.

GM engineers were, most likely, trying to set a Nurburgring lap time for the 2015 Corvette Z06 when they crashed. In case you were wondering, the track appears to be dry at the time.

There was no official report on the incident, but the good news is that the car doesn’t appear to have been totaled. By the way, the whole incident reminded us of this year’s Detroit Motor Show, where, among others, GM exhibited a Z06 prototype cutaway. Open body aside, you could see just how far the car had been pushed during the development just by looking at the ties.

Oh and in case you’re wondering just how capable the 2015 Z06 is through the twisties, you should that, earlier this year, the Porsche 911 Turbo facelift prototype also crashed during Nurburgring testing. Sure, the accident was lighter, but it all goes to prove that only those who don't push their cars to the limit won't crash.
