Watch Two 2022 Mercedes-Benz G-Class 4x4 Squared Frolic in the Snow

The original Mercedes-Benz G-Class 4x4 Squared was the magnum opus of the entire Gelandewagen lineage this side of the limited-edition 6x6 or the Maybach semi-convertible.

Like the G 63 6x6 and the Mercedes-Maybach G 650 Landaulet, the first G 500 4x4 Squared started as a limited-edition version of the ‘regular’ G-Wagen, but thanks to huge demand, it soon became a standalone model that eventually enhanced the lineup.

With its portal axles, gigantic ground clearance, and the three locking differentials that are part of the G-Class lineage, the Mercedes-Benz G 500 4x4 Squared (G 550 in the U.S.) became a force to be reckoned with that could go head-to-head or even obliterate military vehicles in any off-road competition.

Its story ended when the G-Wagen's previous generation was replaced with the current model, which no longer features a rigid axle in the front or an old-school recirculating-ball steering system.

While some people saw the new G-Class as the end of an era, Mercedes-Benz is unfazed and is currently working on the second generation of the mighty 4x4 Squared, which has been spotted testing countless times in near-production form for the past year or so.

Just last week, we brought you a pair of prototypes appearing to be put to the test on some snowy roads in the northern parts of Sweden, where many German carmakers have research and development operations this time of year.

As it happens, the spy photographers who got us those photos also got some video footage of the two cars frolicking in the snow this week, and judging by the exhaust V8 burbles, the next 4x4 Squared might come as a full-AMG model this time, not a Mercedes-Benz.

That said, the design motifs under the light camouflage aren’t in tone with the exhaust sounds, with both the AMG-specific bumpers and the Panamericana grille appearing to be missing from the overall package.

Both vehicles are sporting portal axles on the rear, while the front ends seem to be putting a set of oversized control arms to good work in helping those massive wheels with the best traction possible.

Whether the 2022 G-Class 4x4 Squared will be an AMG or not remains to be seen, but you can be sure it will elevate its off-road game to new heights when it goes on sale later this year.
