Watch These Shows If You're a Car, Space or Aircraft Fan (March 2023 - Netflix, Hulu)

Spring is a time of transition, including in showbiz: moving on from the graveyard month of February, we get the first action movies of the new season, setting the tone and the pace for the coming summer. The five biggest streaming platforms might not have much proper automotive content for diehard fans this month, but you can still get your kicks from what’s available.

As it’s become tradition, we’re here to help with our autoevolution must-watch guide. Spring also brings bad weather, so keep this bookmarked for those times when you might want to chill with some solid car action.

NETFLIX

• R.I.P.D. (2013)

A classic buddy cop comedy slash action movie, with a deadly twist (ha!), packed with explosions and monsters. Directed by Robert Schwentke, it stars Jeff Bridges and Ryan Reynolds as unwilling partners on a huge mission, and that’s the film’s highest selling point. Think of it as 6 Underground, but with monsters and the spirits of the dead: a typical Ryan Reynolds action movie with plenty of comedy, and we mean that in both the good and the bad way.

• I Am Georgina (2022)

Season 2 of the original Netflix Spanish-language reality series kicks off on March 2, and while reality programming might have little relevance to most gearheads, this one feels like a window into a different world. The titular Georgina is Georgina Rodríguez, an influencer, fashionista and the partner of the one and only Cristiano Ronaldo. Scripted narratives and high fashion moments aside, the series offers a good look at the kind of lifestyle only Ronaldo’s millions can afford, including super-expensive custom or one-off cars (make that an entire garage of them), private jets, and vacations onboard the fanciest superyachts out there. It’s not bad escapism, is what we’re saying, even for those of us who might not appreciate this kind of programming.

• MH370: The Plane That Disappeared (2023)

Exactly 9 years after one of the biggest tragedies and mysteries in modern aviation history, Netflix tries its hand at shedding some light, if not offer answers, on the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370. The documentary takes a look at MH370 and how it vanished on its way from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, the way in which authorities handled the investigation, and the possible causes of the tragedy while trying to answer an apparently very simple question, “What are we missing?” Planes go up and they come down, one way or another, but they never disappear into thin air, with 239 people onboard.

• Murder Mystery 2 (2023)

Another Netflix original that brings the action and the star power. Some years ago, you wouldn’t have imagined Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler as love interests in the same film, but here we are, with them playing a married couple of private eyes, about to get into a new kind of international trouble, involving speedboats, high-speed chases, explosions, and Mark Strong playing some kind of smooth – and handsome – special agent.

HBO and HBO MAX

• The Expendables series

HBO is having an excellent season for its original series, either established ones that are returning for a new season or newcomers like The Last of Us. It also seems to be purging a lot of old content, but not bringing a whole lot of new stuff, at least for the time being. So we’ll have to make do with The Expendables series (also streaming on Hulu and Amazon Prime), starting with the 2010 original, which will forever go down in history as the most awesome combo action movie starring the biggest action stars of the ‘90s. Grab some popcorn, and enjoy the nostalgia-heavy ride.

• Triangle of Sadness (2022)

How about we interest you in an Oscar-nominated piece of satire that takes place onboard a $250 million superyacht cruise? Triangle of Sadness, the latest, critically-acclaimed outing from director Ruben Ostlund is in the running for Best Picture at the 2023 Academy Awards, also taking place this month. To us average-salaried folks, it’s a window into an inaccessible, incredible world, but with a twist that turns the old hierarchy on its head. If you missed this one in theaters, now’s your time to catch up: Triangle of Sadness premieres on March 3.

AMAZON PRIME

• Daisy Jones & The Six (2023)

This new arrival is a 10-episode series based on Taylor Jenkins Reid’s 2019 best-selling novel of the same name, about a fictional band that fell apart at the height of their fame, loosely inspired by the drama within Fleetwood Mac. Starring Elvis Presley’s granddaughter Riley Keough, Sam Claflin, Camila Morrone, and Suki Waterhouse, the series has nothing to do with the automotive world and everything to do with showbiz. The only reason it’s an entry on our list is that it promises to deliver plenty of ‘70s nostalgia, including of the automotive kind as showcased in the trailer, with vintage rides, classic tour buses, and the OG vanlife, before vanlife become a trendy Instagram hashtag. It’s worth checking out, if only for that: the first three episodes premiere on March 3.

• Jackass Forever (2022)

This one is an entry that hardly needs an introduction anymore. Jackass has been around since 2000, and since 2002 on the big screen, and in all these years, it’s become synonymous with stupid and dangerous stunts, a very specific brand of laugh-till-you-pee kind of humor, and daredevil attitude. As such, Jackass Forever brings back the old gang, now in the most literal sense, to see if they still have what it takes to stick around being jackasses. Bicycles, scooters, motorized vehicles, and all kinds of homemade contraptions will be involved.

PARAMOUNT+

• Air Force One (1997)

Speaking of classics, it doesn’t get any better than this: a movie about the attempted hijacking of the world’s safest aircraft, on its way back to DC after a visit to Moscow. A late-’90s classic action with Harrison Ford as the U.S. President and Gary Oldman as a communist radical, with supporting roles from Wendy Crewson, Paul Guilfoyle, William H. Macy, Liesel Matthews, Dean Stockwell, and a replica of the Air Force One, the U.S. Presidential plane. Unlike the real-life Air Force One, this one carries a President who’s not afraid to throw hands while delivering badass one-liners, if the situation calls for it.

• Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986)

We’re rounding off this month’s guide with another classic, which also happens have to “birthed” an iconic movie car, the Ferrari that – SPOILER ALERT – died the most ignoble death at the end. Ferris Bueller (Matthew Broderick in his career-defining role) is a notorious slacker, and he was determined to have one more day off school no matter what. With his friends and a “borrowed” red 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder, it became the most incredible day of his life, though not necessarily so for the Ferrari.
