Just like in 2018, this year's new motoring records belonged to the Volkswagen ID R. Time and time again, the proof-of-concept racer showed its skills on both special tracks and in the wild, letting the world know that electric drivetrains are a power not to be messed with.
The most recent achievement of the ID R was setting the world's first record on a Chinese stretch of road known as the Tianmen Mountain. Until the ID R got to China, there was no official time to beat.

At the beginning of September, the car and its driver, Romain Dumas, navigated the 99 turns of the Chinese road in 7:38.585 minutes, climbing from 200 meters above sea level (656 feet) to 1,519 meters (4,900 feet) over a distance of 11 km (7 miles). The top speed achieved at certain points was 230 kph (143 mph).

And now there's video to prove it.

As the glamour of the Frankfurt Motor Show begins to dwindle, the Germans found time to publish a video of the most exciting moments of the run. You can watch it below this piece.

Also, the carmaker is so excited of the car's achievements that they even created a booklet showcasing the car and its achievement, also available for download in the section below.

“I will certainly remember this record run on Tianmen Mountain for ever as my most spectacular outing. I am proud to have set a record with the electric Volkswagen ID.R in China,” the driver said in a statement.

Now with a new accomplishment on its belt, the ID R raises the bar even further. It already holds the record for Pikes Peak hill climb, Goodwood Festival of Speed hill climb and the EV lap record at the Nürburgring.

And it was all made possible by the car's powertrain, consisting of two electric motors that develop 680 horsepower and 650 Nm of torque.
