Watch the Tesla Van We Never Got Come to Life in Front of Your Eyes

There was a time when a Tesla electric van seemed like a very likely thing to happen, but quickly after the Model X came out, any potential plan for a people-mover that might have existed was scrapped.
It didn't make sense for Tesla. The Model X proved to make an excellent family car with its numerous seating configurations and falcon-wing doors for supreme access to those rear seats. A van would have had added weight and therefore reduced range and performance, while not offering much more in the sense of space.

Make no mistake, it would have been the coolest van around. Perhaps not the most beautiful, if the Model X is anything to go by, but definitely the one to choose for an all-van drag race. Hell, it would have probably held its own even in a quarter-mile race against your more modern four-cylinder sports cars.

Alas, it was not to be, so we're now left with the task of imagining what such a vehicle would have looked like. As I said, I doubt it would have won any beauty contests - very few vans even qualify to enter - and its chances drop even further if the design would have been based on the Model X electric SUV.

That's what the people behind the Drivable Designs YouTube channel went for when creating the aptly named Tesla Model XL. The thing does indeed appear to be enormous, but it's just a visual trick because, in reality, it wouldn't be any wider, longer, or taller than the Model X. In fact, it turns out that all that needed changing was the sloping of the roofline, and we got ourselves a van.

However, the author decided the Model XL would also have to give up on its most important party trick: the falcon-wing doors. We can't see any reason why the van wouldn't keep the double-hinged doors, but one does become apparent toward the end of the video: being a family car, you're much more likely to want to install a roof box, which means no more door flapping. Worth it? Well, it is a van, after all. Those who buy it are already dead inside, so no harm done.
