MINI has invited us to stem into BMW’s wind tunnel with them and experience the magic that is the foreseen second coming of the MINI Cooper Works GP. Much is expected of this hyper-hatch.
In the wind tunnel, the GP’s improvement become evident. The car has a big wing at the back, fixed to the boot, which together with a lower diffuser reduces lift for the back end by 90 percent. At the front MINI engineers created an engine shield that reduce drag through the underbody and optimizes flow through the engine compartment.
Only 2,000 units will be made, most likely acting as a swan song for the current generation MINI Cooper hatchback, which will be replaced soon.
The GP will no doubt have plenty of power coming from its 1.6-liter turbo, a racy suspension setup and the right sort of balance for the track. One example has already managed to blitz the Nurburgring in 8 minutes and 23 seconds.
