The debut round of the 2014 MotoGP season was truly intriguing one, and we had quite a crash fest at the Losail Circuit in Qatar.
One of the least expected spill took the 2013 runner-up Jorge Lorenzo out of the race in Turn 15 of the very first lap, providing defending champion marc Marquez with a 25-point advantage he undoubtedly didn’t even dare dreaming about. Still, the Qatar track made a lot of victims, as only 17 of the 23 riders managed to cross the finish line.

This helped everyone lucky enough not to crash gain a significantly better placement at the end of the round, with Valentino Rossi finishing second, Dani Pedrosa third and at the other end of the points sheet, Aussie newcomer Broc Parkes to gain his first MotoGP point in his debut race for Paul Bird’s PBM team.

Other good riders went down in Qatar or had mechanical problems. Honda Satellite riders Alvaro Bautista and Stefan Bradl did not finish the race, just like their Yamaha satellite riders Pol Espargaro and Bradley Smith, followed by Avintia’s Hector Barbera.

The new tires Bridgestone brought in Qatar had their fair share of involvement in the crash fest, with their heat-resistant treatment and slightly reduced grip. Combined with the usual sand on the desert track, the first round turned out to be a much less fortunate race for some.
