The first Alta Motors' RedShift MX electric bike was delivered to a customer in mid-December 2015, and now we have some dirt-track action for you. Watching and hearing it zoom over dirt ramps with such agility and ease is truly rewarding and says a lot about how much fun electric bikes are.
The RedShift machines come in two flavors, MX and SM, focusing on dirt and road, respectively. Being postponed more than once, the RedShift motorcycles finally made it to the production phase, and can now be had for a nickel under $15,000 (equivalent to €13,204).

One of the strong selling factors is that these machines are engineered to be ready to race. With each component designed for the maximum strength, the RedShift bikes can be taken to a track right out of the box.

All the main components are housed in the RedShift Bulkhead chassis core that serves as outer motor casing, the cooling circuit for the motor and inverter, as well as the transmission case for the gear reduction. Also, the Bulkhead is the main structural hub that connects the rear suspension, the airframe, the forged monocoque chassis, and the trellis skidframe.

The battery that brings the Alta RedShift MX bikes to life is also a high-tech unit. The Alta Pack is a high-density battery pack that stores 5.8 kWh into 30.8 kilos (68 lb) and produces as much as 350V. It feeds a water-cooled motor that produces 25 hp of continuous power with 40 hp peaks, and will last for about 2 hours of recreational trail/road mixed riding.

With the standard gearing, the RedShift MX can reach 80 mph (129 km/h). The race-ready weight is 255 lb (115.5 kg) with the lighting and switchgear removed, and the 21"/19" wheel combo (front/rear) come with 12" (30.5 cm) of suspension travel. The 37" (94 cm) seat height is maybe a tad high for riders with a shorter inseam, but after all, we're talking MX bikes here. Enjoy this neat short video.
