It's once more history in the making at the Isle of Man TT, with Michael Dunlop, one of the nephews of the legendary road racer Joey Dunlop. During the Superbike TT, Michael became the first rider ever to drop under the magic 17-minute barrier and lap with an average speed of more than 133 mph (214 km/h).
Dunlop rode another BMW S1000RR, the machine that seems to bear him good luck while providing him with a race-winning package. This time, Michael rode the Hawk Racing S1000RR to a blistering 133.393 mph (214.629 km.h) lap and did so from a standing start.
He also said that a 214 mph lap is not entirely impossible, especially as laps that start from a standing point are usually 7 or more seconds slower than flying ones.
Dunlop's performance in the Superbike TT also makes him the first rider in history to lap around the Snaefell Mountain in under 17 minutes. His record now stands at 16"58.254 but with the Senior TT ahead, it will be interesting to see for how long will it endure.
The top five in the RST Superbike TT was completed by Ian Hutchinson riding a Tyco BMW, John McGuinness on a Honda, and Peter Hickman and Dean Harrison on Kawasaki machines.
