Watch Loris Baz' 290 KM/H Crash at Sepang

Avintia's French rider Loris Baz was involved in a mind-blowing high-speed crash on the second day of the Sepang test, but he literally walked away unscathed from the wreck. Baz crashed on the very start/finish straight, but the exact causes that led to this event are still being investigated.

The first indications lead to a possible mechanical problem that caused his rear tire to lock and explode, but we are still waiting for an official result of the investigation. Photos taken at the Sepang circuit after the crash show a massively worn-out rear tire that exploded.

Footage from the track shows Baz' bike with the rear sliding out of control and with metal parts coming in contact with the asphalt, generating a lot of sparks. He then loses control of the Ducati and crashes, with the estimated speed being around 290 km/h (180.2 mph).

Additional imagery shows Baz coming off the motorcycle and sliding on the track, while his flipped bike charges forward, coming to a halt a hundreds of meters from the initial impact with the ground. We've also seen videos of the bike being carried away from the track and showing extensive damage.

Baz' leathers were almost torn apart, yet he walked away with some bruises

Loris Baz miraculously walked away from this insane crash, and below you also have a short video from the official MotoGP TV feed during the crash. Pit lane commentator Dylan Gray was in the middle of an interview when Baz crashed meters from him. Gray's voice shows relief when he says that the rider is walking away: "rider okay, he's just getting up," he adds. The screech of metal scraping against the asphalt can also be clearly heard.

Looking at the bike and the damage his leathers took, we feared that Baz was injured, but he escaped this crash with minor bruises and was back on the bike for the rest of the test. We'll just leave the end to the anti-helmet guys....
