Christophe Barriere-Varju is a Man, with capital m. A common motorcycle rider with a huge dream and an even bigger determination to fulfil it. Christophe dreamed of taking part in the cruelest, toughest, most dangerous and demanding cross-country race, the Dakar Rally.
An immense undertaking for professional riders, the Dakar felt like a daunting goal for him, but this never set him back for good and acted more as a catalyst in pursuing his dream.
A successful motocross rider when he was young, Christophe Barriere-Varju became a businessman and sort of let bikes go. However, his dream would not desert him.
When two dreams become one
He meets Simon Lee, a movie producer with a similar dream, to cover such an epic race. With almost no money, no team, no mechanics and all, the odds seem to be against them.
Broken GPS beacons, the biggest hardships in the middle of the desert, the bivouac life, the constant fear of not making it through to the end of the rally, the mixed feelings and sleep deprivation, they all show the real life of a Dakar competitor.
But if you expect Christophe to fail, you'll be glad to know that each of the hardships he had to endure only made him stronger. In 2010, Christophe Barriere-Varju reached the finish line of the Dakar in the 72nd position, being in the first half of the ranking.
