Watch a Renault Clio Rally Crash Nearly Take Out The Crowd

As you’ve already figured out, the action involves a crash that took place at the Jolly Rally Valle d’Aosta 2014, an Italian event held over the weekend. The little Clio came into a left-hander way past the limits of grip, so actually the fact that the car understeered wasn’t all that important - given the momentum it carried, it’s hard to believe that an all-wheel drive setup, for instance, could have helped.

The crash

The Clio skidded onto the side of the road, where a violent encounter with Mother Nature send it thumbing into the air. This is where the horror began, as a group of spectators had chosen to play the wild card, sitting way to close to the track. Judging in a two-dimensional manner these people were supposed to be safe, as the cars passing by couldn’t have reached their high position. Alas, they didn’t take into account that rallying and air time go pretty much hand in hand.

As the Renault returned to the road, it missed the crown by inches. While some people managed to run away from the path of the car, there was one girl who escaped the thumbing car by sheer luck.

Miraculosuly, none of the spectators were injured in the unfortunate event. Alas, the driver, Piero Scavone and his navigator, Diego D’Herin were taken to a local hospital, albeit with reports indicating their injuries were not severe.

Interestingly enough, the Clio, or what the rollcage held in place after the multiple impacts, now resembles a first-generation Megane Coupe. We’ve attached a photo below so you can see what we mean.
