Videos showing exactly how pileups occur are few and far between, and we mostly see footage of immediately after the crash, or just some photos. Pileups are very dangerous, and they can have disastrous consequences.
People get injured, cars get totalled and the roadway is completely blocked for hours. These pileups occur usually out of the fault of one driver, who panics and brakes far too much, and gets rear-ended by another car, which in turn gets rear-ended, and so on.
In this video we see just such an unfortunate event unfolds right from the start, and it the end it affects at least six cars. Keep in mind that this is a small-scale pileup, and some can stretch for miles and take days to clear up.
They only seem to occur in very bad weather conditions (fog, heavy rain and heavy snow), and those which take place on snowy uncleared highways are all the more dangerous, as drivers simply cannot stop in time and the speeds at which they crash are far greater.
