Watch a BMW M49 Engine Put Through DINAN's Dyno

Between 1975 and 1979, BMW's 3.0CSL model won every European Touring Car Championship season. It wasn't by mistake. It was due to one extraordinary car fitted with one extraordinary engine: M49.

This engine, in the M49/3 3.5-liter version, developed 480 HP at an astonishing 8,500 RPM! It had Kugelfisher mechanical injectors and butterfly valves. It was amazing, and eventually, was used on the famous M1 supercar, in a revised version.

Now, the guys from DINAN got their hands on one of these, straight out of an 1976 E9 CSL that won the 24hr Daytona race. They set it up on their own engine dyno and put it to the test.

Fortunately for us, a camera was there also to film the process. If something can raise a gearhead's pulse, this is it and if you're amongst them, definitely watch it (you can even see the butterfly valves moving).
