Watch a BMW M235i Shame a V8 Lexus IS F in a Drag Race

A lot of people have been going around lately, saying that BMW is forever dead for using turbocharged engines and that the competitors that are keeping the naturally aspirated units alive are the one you should pick.

Well... We don’t agree... You see, it might be that BMW is no longer making any naturally aspirated engine and it’s a shame, really, as they used to make some of the best in the business but that doesn’t mean that the engineering brilliance they once had went anywhere. No. It just means that times are changing and manufacturers are adapting.

Furthermore, their turbocharged units are just as good if not even better than their NA ‘grandparents’. That being said, the power and efficiency of the 3-liter inline 6-cylinder N55 engine was just exemplified in a drag race, staged by the guys from TFLCar.

Known for their bloopers, the guys decided to set up a drag race between a good old 5-liter V8 and BMW’s latest turbocharged jewel. The cars they picked were the Lexus IS F and the BMW M235i.

Looking over the numbers, you might think that the German is in danger here, having 100 HP and 50 Nm (32 lb-ft) of torque less than the 423 HP, 505 Nm (372 lb-ft) Lexus but you might want to reconsider, as two decisive factors come into play: the 1 mile (1,600 meters) altitude and the weight difference.

The Bimmer is around 200 kg (441 lbs) lighter and has turbocharging which helps at such high altitude while the Lexus is heavier and has to breathe through his nose alone. The result is quite predictable therefore, but nothing could’ve prepared us for the way the little Bimmer won. Check it out!
