If it wasn’t for the bulletproof 2JZ engine, the Supra would have probably been a car with the same amount of success as the Hyundai Tiburon (Coupe)... as in none.
The 3-liter 6-cylinder 2JZ engines were produced since 1991, the Toyota Aristo being the first one to bear one under the hood. These engines are divided into three more versions - the 2JZ-GE which uses Sequential Electronic Fuel Injection and develops 220 hp, the 2JZ-GTE which uses sequential twin turbochargers and recessed piston tops producing 276 hp and the 2JZ-FSE which is always used with an automatic transmission and it develops 217 hp.

It doesn’t sound too much, right? But add a couple of bigger turbos, an intercooler, forged pistons and other racing parts and you will be astonished of the amount of power these things can develop, extreme scenarios including outputs of over 1,000 hp. See these medium-tuned 2JZs in the video bellow averaging about 700 horses, which is more than a Lamborghini.
