Wards has decided to focus on the ease of use of modern production cars, which have increasingly complicated multimedia systems and technologies.
This year’s Wards 10 Best Interior got a spin-off, which is called 10 Best UX. The two letters stand for User Experience, and the term comes from IT and web design, but it also applies to numerous areas of industry. It refers to the ergonomic aspects of the product or design, and is an evaluation of its ease of use.
The team at Wards has focused on the user-friendliness of vehicle systems, and they evaluated both safety features and comfort elements. From touch screens and navigation systems, to voice control, every function was graded. The best results were obtained by the details that were easy to understand, and did not require the user to consult the manual.
The test took two months, and the team evaluated 29 vehicles available in the United States of America. The ten best cars were presented alphabetically, so this category does not have a definitive winner, but a list of the best designs concerning user experience, or UX.
Audi’s Q7 is first on the list, followed by BMW’s 7 Series. Next up is the Chrysler Pacifica, followed in the listing by the Ford Escape and the GMC Acadia.
Honda’s new Ridgeline is also present, and it is followed by the Hyundai Elantra and the Infiniti Q50. The list is completed by the Lexus RX and Mercedes-Benz’s all-new E-Class.
Out of all the models above, the Hyundai Elantra was the most affordable, while the BMW 7 Series was the most expensive. Wards has noted that three American, three German, and three Japanese automakers made the top 10, along with a Korean brand.
They say that this global split of brands in the ten best user experience design shows that every major market is engaged in this aspect of automotive development.
