Wanted: Ratan Tata Successor!

Ratan Tata, the 71-year old chairman of the Indian group Tata, started the search for a successor, with candidates coming from both the domestic and overseas countries. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Tata said that the future chairman might very well come from within the group but other possible candidates are also being looked at.

"We are in the process of formalising a successor to me. We have some outside consultants and a formal search process is on. There are no constraints,"
Tata said in the interview. "It would certainly be easier if that candidate were an Indian national. But now that 65 percent of our revenues come from overseas, it could also be an expatriate sitting in that position with justification now."

Ratan Tata is one of those who supported the Indian group's international expansion and, even if some of the acquisitions failed to impress due to the economic recession, the company expects better performances in the future.

"Tata Motors was able to extinguish its borrowing of $3 billion through this difficult period, and most people don't realise the magnitude of that task," he said.

Tata Motors is the creator of the so-called the world's cheapest car, the Nano model. Interest in Nano is still high and the Indian manufacturer expects to produce around 200,000 units in 2010.

"Effectively, there will be nearly 40,000 cars produced from the two plants this fiscal with Pantnagar accounting for a lion's share. Sanand will come into its own from 2010-11," inside sources were quoted as saying by the Hindu Business Line.
