Want a Personal Submarine? Check Out the New DeepFlight Dragon

As the company name suggests, DeepFlight considers that flying should be practiced underwater too as long as you have the right vehicle for it. The same principles used by planes can be adapted to work in water, since it’s a fluid too. The company built a plane-like watercraft before, but now it will introduce one that can be used with minimum skills.

It’s called the DeepFlight Dragon and it will be introduced to the public at the 2014 Monaco Yacht Show next week, intending to launch a new fashion and even niche in the tourism and rental market with it.

According to an interview with Gizmag, founder Graham Hawkes came by the idea after seeing a full-size personal electric drone that could be piloted by regular people.

So, he took the fuselage from the previous DeepFlight Super Falcon (which by the way, really looks like a plane) and fitted it six rotors, a huge wing at the back and other features that make it easier to use.

One of the biggest advantage of the new Dragon, is the fact that it has positive buoyancy, which means that, unlike other submarines, you will be brought to surface in case you run out of power or other malfunction occurs. Which is a must for the safety of inexperienced users it is aimed at.

The DeepSilver Dragon is 4.8 meters long and 2.1 meters wide, having enough room for two passengers, which stick their heads out from the fuselage under two transparent domes. It can take up to 230 kg and can go down to 120 m at a cruising speed of 4 knots.

Power is assured by a 15 kWh lithium ion phosphate battery, feeding six pressure-compensated direct-drive brushless DC thrusters, each delivering 1.2 kW.

While the exterior looks like a bulky Formula 1 car with two seats and propellers instead of wheels, the interior won’t amaze you with nothing worth of $1.5 million, which is the total price with additional support gear.

You still get a polished stainless steel floor with forward and rear footrests, custom fit carbon fiber seats with integrated 5-point harness, adjustable flow air conditioning system as well as a custom-designed artificial horizon head-up display and consoles.

Speaking of additional stuff included in the 1.5 million-dollar price, there’s some sort of inflatable launch ramp, that will keep the watercraft steady floating so the passengers can safely climb aboard without tipping it over.

Still, with a price like that, we doubt there will be many resorts out there to buy one for tourists to rent by the hour as if it’s just another jet-ski. And as with the other underwater crafts, the Dragon will probably remain a luxury toy for the uber-rich.
