Walter Rohrl to Enter 2010 Nurburgring 24 Hour Race with GT3 RS

We have here a fine example of a marketing exercise from Porsche. By competing in next year’s Nurburgring 24 Hour Race, 62 year old, double World Rally Champion, Walter Röhrl will become even more of a Porsche factory driver thus being a better company ambassador.

The mechanism is pretty simple. He’ll be racing on a Porsche 911 GT3 RS, which the company promotes as kind of a race car also drivable on the road. Instead of investing money in various marketing campaigns, it’s much more efficient to obtain motorsport results, because these speak for themselves.

"No other road-going 911 has ever been as close to a race car as this current GT3 RS. That's why I'm thrilled to be able to prove that this sports car is up to the challenge of the 24 hour race,"
said Röhrl. So the terrain has been set, now all Walter has to do is win. As a side note, we’re curious if Sabine Schmitz is one of his fans.

Now, let’s talk a little bit about the car, the 997 (generation) Porsche 911 GT3 RS. We suspect the car has a long name engineered to keep you busy pronouncing it while its engine reaches the optimum temperature. Besides the long name it also has a high-revving 450 HP, naturally aspirated 3.8 litre six-cylinder boxer engine. The unit sits on dynamic engine mounts, which change their stiffness and damping effect in order to improve the connection between the engine and the chassis. The whole package is wrapped in a body with aerodynamic enhanced surfaces. You hear that Mr. Bangle? Not flame but aerodynamic surfacing.

We’re looking forward to May 15-16, 2010, when the 38th edition of the Nurburgring 24 Hour Race takes place.
