Back in December, we reported that Porsche’s marketing campaign for the 911 GT3 RS will mark racing legend Walter Rohl’s return to the Nurburgring, as he will compete in the Nurburgring 24 hour race.
Recently, The 62 year old double WRC Champion met his teammates for the race during a seat fitting session at the Weissach Motorsport Centre. On the 15th and 16 th of May, Rohrl will race the stock 911 GT3 RS with the former DTM driver Roland Asch (59) & journalists Horst von Saurma-Jeltsch (55) and Chris Harris (35). Each member of the team is an experienced Nurburgring diver, having contested on the track multiple times.
Roland Asch holds two DTM titles and taken part in the German 24 hour event over a dozen times. The driver has a rich Porsche racing history. Horst von Saurma-Jeltsch, the chief editor of the Sport Auto magazine, has been a part of the 24 hour marathon twenty times. His journalistic career includes the setting of a record laptime on the Nordschleife behind the wheel of a Porsche Carrera GT. The British motorsport journalist Chris Harris has contested in the Nurburgring 24 hour race four times and is also a member of the Porsche racing family, having taken part in two editions of the Carrera Cup.
Rohrl and his teammates will drive the 450HP 911 GT3 RS in two VLN races, in order to train for the 24 hour event.
“I’m sure we will quickly familiarise ourselves with the track and the car. We’ll need to practice our pit stops. After all, it was 17 years ago that I last made a driver change at race speed.” said Rohrl.
