This October, at Mecum’s Chicago 2018 auction, some 1,000 vehicles will be looking for new owners capable and willing to pay a lot of money for them.
Among the 1,000 cars sits a very special one: a 1979 Porsche 930 Turbo, once owned by Chicago Bears’ running-back Walter Payton. In fact, says Mecum, it is not just any car from the former NFL star’s garages, but the first collector car he ever purchased, four years after his career took off.
The car will sell with the original 3.3-liter turbocharged flat-6 engine, that paired to a 4-speed transmission is capable of developing 265 horsepower. Despite its age, the car has only 9,950 miles on the odometer, making Mecum and the seller of the car, Walter’s son Jarrett, confident they would cash in quite a bit on the vehicle.
Visually, the Porsche looks like it did back when it was purchased by Payton in 1979. It comes with the original silver paint covering the body, the original black leather interior, and a sunroof to link the two.
“This was his first sports car,” said in a statement the player's son, Jarrett Payton. “This was the first big-name sports car that he bought. He bought it in 1979, the year before I was born."
“He got into the league in ’75, and early on, his main focus was just playing football. That focus helped him become the leading rusher with the most carries those first three years. He worked hard to ensure he had established himself, so when he was getting to the good part of his career, when the ‘80s came around, he wanted to treat himself.”
Alongside the Porsche to be sold by Mecum, hidden in the one thousand of cars available, will be the four collector-grade cars from the soon-to-be demolished McDonald’s Store No. 1 Museum in Des Plaines, Illinois, as well as 57 cars from the Tom Jellison Collection.
