Walter Borst Is Opel's New Boss

GM's German unit Opel has finally named the successor of the recently departed Carl Peter Forster: Walter Borst. The largely unknown Borst joined Opel's supervisory board in the last few weeks, after acting as treasurer for GM since February 2003.

Borst will take the role of chairman of the manufacturer's supervisory board. His previous involvement with Opel includes serving as director of financial analysis and planning for GM Europe and as Opel's chief financial officer in between October 2000 to January 2003.

"Walter Borst is a supervisory board chairman who has been connected to Opel and Europe for a long time. He is well aware of the German codetermination process, so that he can well bridge between GM and Opel/Vauxhall," Klaus Franz, Opel's works council head said according to just-auto.com.

"I have tremendous respect and admiration for the Opel brand, its products and its highly committed employees. I am very confident that Opel has a bright future, and I am looking forward to contribute in my new role as head of the supervisory board," Borst said in a statement cited by the source.

The rest of the Opel management team will be announced next week, as Opel and Vauxhall CEO Nick Reilly said yesterday, while a full viability plan for the German brand will be revealed in January.

"I said earlier that we would have a plan in place by year-end. Now it looks like an announcement may slip into January. This is not a broken promise. It is a pledge to do something right," argued Nick Reilly.
