Wallace Still in Need for Sponsorship

As the curtain is getting ready to fall over the 2009 NASCAR season next week, when the Champion's Week will get under way, some of the team are yet to secure sponsorship for the 2010 season.

Among them, Rusty Wallace, whose contract with Five-Hour Energy is "100 percent done" for the car driven by his son Stephen, but only secured about 40 percent for the 62 car driven by Brendan Gaughan.

"I'm getting a little nervous about it. I got all the employees together and told them we were 50-50 on a lot of [sponsorship opportunities] so if you've got to go to Phoenix and Homestead and look for a job, go for it, because I don't have the budget at the moment," Wallace was quoted as saying by NASCAR.

As we already told you, Wallace will field Toyotas for the 2010 season, after the two-year support given by Chevrolet expires by the end of this season.

"We decided that at the end of the day, our goal as a race team is simple: to win races and championships. Thus, we all had to take a long look at which manufacturer partner could best help us reach that goal,"

As for Wallace's drivers, Wallace Jr. and Gaughan ended their season seventh and ninth, respectively. This, together with the almost absent sponsorship, left room for speculation that some layoffs are on the way.

"The best case, if we have to lay some of the guys off, is that we would be able to hire them back if we get the sponsorship we need. But I know I'm not going to go into Patti and my life savings to run a race car," Wallace concluded.
