The flexibility of the new MQB platform means that Volkswagen will make the Golf 7 into everything from a PHEV to an EV. But until that day arrives, most likely within the next two years, data needs to be gathered.
Just like Audi is doing with the A3 e-tron, VW will also test the electric Golf in America, The official announcement says that 20 prototype E-Golfs will be tested for a nine-month period of time in the US. 12 of these will actually go to employees.

These test cars should have a range of about 150 km (93 miles) and a top speed of 140 km/h (87 mph).

“This E-Golf test fleet will provide critical feedback on these vehicles that will prove essential in our sustainability efforts and in the drive towards electric mobility,” commented Jonathan Browning, CEO of the Volkswagen Group of America.

“For a successful market launch of electric vehicles, the way that home chargers are handled is very important, along with easy access to public charging infrastructure," said Rudolf Krebs, Executive Vice president and Head of Volkswagen Group E-Traction.
"For the U.S., we also have to recognize the specific legal regulations as well as the different characteristics of the electricity supply: both the reduced 110-volt mains supply and the type of charging plugs," he added.
