VW US Closes Best Year Since 2003

The US auto industry recorded pretty impressive high sales in 2010, most companies selling cars in the country managing to post significant recoveries over the disappointing 2009 when the recession severely hit the auto sector. Volkswagen of America is one of the big players that managed to exceed expectations in 2010, closing the year with the best overall year sales since 2003.

"The Volkswagen team is proud to end 2010 on a positive note, receiving the great IIHS news and achieving record sales numbers not only for specific models but for the best total year sales since 2003," said Mark Barnes, Chief Operating Officer, Volkswagen of America, Inc.

Specifically, 2010 brought a 20 percent increase over 2009 total year sales, while December marked a 17 percent increase as compared to the same period of the previous year. The Tiguan achieved its best month ever, selling 2,551 vehicles, which represents a 42 percent increase versus December 2009. Touareg posted an increase of 68 percent, the Jetta ended the year with a 34 percent rise, while Golf and Routan sold 70 and 50 percent respectively more cars than in December 2009.

"As we saw last month, our minivan and SUVs continue to be popular among U.S. consumers as does the all-new Jetta with its long-list of standard features and attractive price. As we move into the 2011, we look forward to continuing this positive sales trend with the introduction of some of the best Volkswagen models ever, including the New Midsize Sedan to be built in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and the all-new 2012 Beetle."
