VW Group’s city car triplets have never been designed to stand toe to toe with a Citroen DS3 parked on the high street. They’re main focus is being efficient and cheaper to buy than superminis.
But some people can’t help but fall in love with a small car, no matter how boxy it actually looks. Thus, the Up! and its brothers are perfect candidates for a “dolce vita” transplant.
Changing these cars into complete convertibles would be very tricky, not to mention pointless. But adding a soft folding roof as an option would actually help them tremendously. This was done with the first generation Renault Twingo and proved quite popular.
The Germans could create a bespoke small convertible like Renault’s Wind, but sales of this model have been less than stellar for some reason, so a €500 optional folding roof is the best way to offer fresh air in the Up!.
