VW Unveils New-Look, Euro-Spec 2015 Passat

Feast your eyes on the all-new 2015 Volkswagen Passat. While North America will continue to get the Americanized (read: plumped up) version of the U.S.-built Passat, the European version of this sedan and wagon are getting a complete overhaul for 2015.

As you can see, the Euro-spec 2015 Passat has a more stylish and more mature appearance… dare we say Audi-like? The beveled LED headlights and more aggressive front fascia are enough to overlook the still-boring three-slat grille. Sharper body creases along the side lead back into the LED taillights, and the squared-off hind quarters gives this car a very athletic overall look. As attractive as the new Euro Passat sedan is, the Passat Variant (VW speak for station wagon) has us forgetting all about the Audi A6 Avant.

Inside, the new Passat will get an equally upgraded interior, which is adorned with plenty of high-tech entertainment and safety systems. Like the recently introduced Audi TT, the Euro Passat features a fully digital instrument cluster called the Active Information Display. VW also promises an extendable head-up display as well as an App-based rear seat entertainment for tablet computers. For safety, the 2015 Passat will offer “world firsts” (presumably for VW) that include emergency automatic braking, traffic jam assist and trailer assist.

Riding on the MQB platform, VW says that the 2015 Passat will be up to 85 kilograms (about 187 pounds) lighter than the outgoing model, and it will be lower, longer and wider. The biggest news might be the new powertrain options that will be available on this car. In addition to the 10 engines (gas and diesel) that all come standard with start/stop technology, the 2015 Passat will also get a new plug-in hybrid version. Combining a 115kw (154hp) gas engine with an 80kw (107 hp) electric motor, the plug-in Passat will have a total output of 211 hp and an all-electric driving range of 50 km (31 miles).

Pricing for this new PHEV model have not been released, but the 2015 VW Passat sedan will start at 25,875 euros ($35,214 USD) while the 2015 Passat Variant will start at 25,950 ($35,317 USD).
