Volkswagen Tiguan has just the top safety rating following the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) new roof strength safety test. Volkswagen's small SUV received the "good" rating, an award achieved only by vehicles that come with roofs which are more than twice as strong as minimum federal safety standards require.
This isn't the first top safety award received by Volkswagen Tiguan in the IIHS safety tests, as this particular model also achieved the highest possible rating in 2008.
For model year 2009, Volkswagen equipped Tiguan with electronic stability control, ESP and six airbags as standard. Seat airbags are also included in the package but only as an option. There are three different trim levels, S, SE and SEL, with pricing starting at $23,200.
“We focus on safety technologies that help to prevent accidents and protect occupants, as seen by Volkswagen being one of the few manufacturers to offer Electronic Stability Control standard across our entire model line-up, and this recognition by the IIHS is further validation of that,” said Mark Barnes, COO, Volkswagen of America.
“We’re proud of the recognition the Tiguan has received from the IIHS, we know that this is an exceptional SUV, offering performance, functionality and safety.”
In terms of engine configurations, Tiguan comes with a 2.0-liter TSI unit as standard, with maximum power going as much as 200 hp. Thanks to this advanced four-cylinder powerplant, Tiguan is capable of achieving a fuel efficiency rating of 19 mpg in city mode and 26 mpg in highway conditions. Both front-wheel drive and 4Motion modes are available for the entire range.
