VW Stops Scirocco R Production, Facelift Coming with 300 HP

The Scirocco R is one of the lesser known models in the hot hatch market. Expensive and seemingly outdated, it actually is a more involving driver's car than the Golf R. Based on the platform of the old Golf 6, this car has been on sale for quite a while now and an update is on the way.

Since the old design can't carry the Scirocco any more, VW is going to give the Scirocco a facelift soon. A recent report from Car & Driver states that production for the 'Rocco R has stopped. The reason is not slow demand, but the fact that production of the 265 hp EA113 turbo engine has been halted.

Its replacement should be the new 300 hp version of the 2.0 TSI rated at 300 hp metric and 380 Nm (280 lb-ft) of torque That's the same engine you get in the Golf 7 R and the Audi S3 model range.

Cosmetic changes will also be made to the front bumper of the car, which together with headlights should adopt the new VW design language. According to C&D, the facelift for the Scirocco R will come out next year at the Geneva Motor Show. Hopefully, they will be ready to sell it as well by that time.

With a keen look and 300 horsepower, the R is walking in the footsteps of all-time FWD hot hatch greats.
