It's been a while since Paris saw the debut of what Volkswagen's Passat GTE, a plug-in hybrid that claims a fuel consumption of only 1.6/100 km. Sounds good, doesn't it, but expect a price tag to match that figure.
While we have our doubts about the consumption figure posted by Volkswagen for the Passat GTE, we'll refrain from making any claims until we get to put that aspect to the test. What we can comment on at this time is the price, namely the car's official sticker in Germany.

Without delaying the inevitable, allow us to tell you that in Germany, the Passat GTE wears a starting price tag of 44,250 euros ($49,320, at current exchange rates) for the sedan while the family-oriented Passat GTE Variant starts at 45,250 euros ($50,427, at current exchange rates).

That being said, let's see what you actually get for that - if you ask us, spicy - price tag. The Passat GTE draws its strength from a hybrid powertrain that mixes a 1.4-liter TSI petrol engine and an 85 kW electric motor. The resulting power output is rated at 219 horsepower while maximum torque sits at 400 Nm (295lb-ft).

Since we're talking about a plug-in hybrid, the battery can be charged from a home power outlet while the car sits in the garage, but also during driving.

According to VW officials, the Passat GTE can travel up to 50 km (31 miles) in full-electric mode, provided the battery was 100 percent charged. It's not much, but you can call it a decent start. Nevertheless, we expect Volkswagen to improve this figure in the future, as new, bigger batteries are beginning to flood the market.
