Volkswagen has just revealed the first sketches of a crisp-looking two-seater concept it calls the GTI Roadster Vision Gran Turismo. This is, of course, a monster made to impress and bewilder hot hatch fans at the annual Worthersee meet and is cut from the same creative fabric as the W12 Golf GTI from a few years back.
The Vdub force is really strong with this one though. Instead of using a Bentley engine like last time, the engineers behind the project chose the iconic VR6 and gave it twin-turbo TSI technology. The 3-liter mill now puts out over 500 horsepower and 665 Nm (491 lb-ft) of torque. This future cult car channels its anger through a seven-speed DSG gearbox twin-clutch transmission and all-wheel drive.
And my God does it have a lot of anger. Because it's designed for Sony's Gran Turismo video games, the GTI Roadster looks as angry as a swarm of wasps. Massive 20-inch wheels with 275mm wide rubber at the back and supercar-style vented disc brakes are fitted, with a diameter of 15.0 inches up front and 14.0 inches at the back. Big splitter, big wing, big fenders – it's almost like they wanted to make a Lamborghini Veneno here, not a Golf.
For a GTI fan, this concept is a major easter egg hunt. For example, the seven-speed gearbox has an extra cog over the current Golf 7 GTI, which means VW might have developed a new gearbox. And where is the 3-liter twin-turbo VR6 from? Audi 3-liter V6 engines hardly fit the angle requirements of the "VR" ideology. It's long been speculated that next-gen Touaregs will get a twin-turbo VR6. Could this be it?
VW and its sister brands have gone on a speedster spree this year. SEAT has announced a concept called the Ibiza Cupster and Skoda has the CitiJet, both cars having the same open-air chopped look to them.
