VW Reportedly Making Plans Entry into Formula 1

The German manufacturer could be making plans for a big arrival in Formula 1. It would be a huge reason for celebration for all the VW fans worldwide seeing the “Peoples Car” speeding along the F1 circuits. The manufacturer could enter the high tech motor sport, according to an online report released by ESPN.

The reason for hope comes from a statement made by Wolfganag Duerheimer, VW head of motor sport, who suggesting that such “a future move” might be considered, and acknowledged that the prospect of the brand entering F1 was not likely, according to a statement from the company in March.

"I could imagine involvement in Formula One in 2018, when the company is at the forefront of the industry. We have enough brands that could do that," Wolfgang Duerheimer was quoted as saying by insideline.com.

The VW Group includes brands like Audi, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Porsche, Seat and Skoda. Looking at Audi, we consider that it might be considered as an option giving its racing pedigree for more than a decade. Of course there is also Porsche a well known name in motor sports racing and has an F1 history as well, which goes back to grand prix race cars designed by Ferdinant Porsche, the founder of what is now known as the Volkswagen Group. The Porsche brand reappeared in F1 championships in 1960 and also, in 1980s and 90s as an engine supplier. Porsche has won once as a constructor and a Porsche-designed engine branded as TAG has won 25 races in the 1980s with the McLaren team.
