VW Presents Hybrid Radio

In a world where hybrid is perhaps the most used word in a day, Volkswagen announced today it has found a new meaning for the word, as it is working on the new generation in-car radio: a system which VW likes to call Hybrid Radio. One which, VW hopes, will bring in-car radios back in front when it comes to infotainment systems.

VW worked with Hit-Radio Antenne Niedersachsen on this little system, attempting to create a technology which would allow users to select what they hear on the radio. With the help of an Internet connection, users create a personalized playlist comprising everything from music to news or entertainment shows.

In other words, you can make the system play music from one radio station at a given hour and then switch to the local news at another. The playlists will be sent to the car by using mobile Internet.

Volkswagen and the radio stations it is working with will begin testing the system in 2011. By then, the carmaker hopes it will have in place an easy-to-use playlist interface, which would allow the Hybrid Radio to play back desired programs at the push of a button. The tests will be carried out in the Lower Saxony area

"The Hybrid Radio is bound to be a success, as it fulfills the listener demands of tomorrow by combining the classic car radio with the Internet", Martin Weiser, Head of Driver Information Systems at Volkswagen said in a statement. "As the car is one of the most important locations for listening to the radio, this concept is particularly significant for Volkswagen as an automobile manufacturer," added Weiser.
