VW Prepares US Clean Diesel Engine

Currently under-construction, the new Chattanooga Volkswagen plant will produce a special clean diesel engine model exclusively addressed to the North American market, Stefan Jacoby, chief of Volkswagen US said in a press conference. Moreover, VW may also introduce a clean diesel hybrid vehicle, obviously supposed to be more environmentally friendly than the diesel variant, releasing 0 gas emissions, the same VW official added.

“We don’t see any conflict between business and the economy and the environment. It’s a business opportunity,” Jacoby said about VW's expansion plans according to Chattanooga Times Free Press.

Besides the zero-gas emissions cars, Volkswagen also promises that the new factory will be 100 percent environmentally friendly. “The facility will conserve resources and limit environmental impact at every step,” Jacoby explained.

As usual, building a new production facility in such an area means thousands of new jobs which according to government's officials, coincides with their plans. VW's representatives said that approximately 2,000 people will be employed by the end of 2011, the first year when the Chattanooga plant becomes fully functional.

Volkswagen tries to take advantage of the global economic crisis and, if most carmakers reduce the production and cut numerous jobs, the German company struggles to expand its business. “Times are tough, but it’s time to go the extra mile,” the Tennessee governor acknowledged.

“We’re not moving one inch from our strategic plan. The plan is on time. It makes us a better neighbor, and we want to be a good neighbor in Tennessee. We can have clean jobs and a bright future,” Stefan Jacoby said. “When we emerge from the downturn, I want Tennessee poised to capitalize in this very sector,” Governor Bredesen concluded.
