VW Group Sales Up 21 Percent in the First Four Months of 2010

The Volkswagen Group posted its sales results for the first four months of 2010. Europe’s largest automaker recorded a 20.9 percent growth compared to the similar period of 2009, selling 2.34 million cars worldwide, compared to 1.93 million.

The Volkswagen Group overtook the global market’s growth rate, which stands at 18.1 percent.

The delivery situation in the first third of the year developed well. The strong upward trend continues on growth markets such as China and Brazil, where Volkswagen is particularly successful. In addition, the Volkswagen Group also made excellent progress on mature markets such as Western Europe and North America,” Christian Klingler, group board member for sales, was quoted as saying in the company’s press release.

Deliveries rose on all key VW markets. In China the Volkswagen Group sold 620,500 vehicles (+53%), making it the largest market for the group and for its core brand Volkswagen. In Brazil, the group sold 217,000 vehicles (+3.7%), while in India sales amounted to 10,400 units (+96%).

On the traditional markets like the USA and Europe, the Volkswagen Group posted significant sales growth as well. The U.S. bought 112,600 cars (+37.7%), with Europe sales at 1.13 million (+9.5%). Although declining, the most important market in Europe was Germany, with 345,500 cars (-6.5%). Sales decrease was a lot smaller than that of the overall market’s contraction (-25.5%).

The best sold brand of the group was Volkswagen, with 1.49 million units sold (+22.6%). The Golf was by far the most popular model, with worldwide deliveries of roughly 223,000 units, representing a rise of 31 percent. Volkswagen was followed by the premium brand Audi, with 360,800 units (+23.7%). Skoda sales worldwide amounted to 242,100 units (+18.6 percent), while the other volume brand SEAT delivered 117,400 vehicles (+10.7%).
