We can pretend all we want that fine handling is just as important as acceleration, but nobody really wants the Swift Sport and the only people who appreciate Porsches are the ones who can afford them.
Today, we can show you two ego-driven, emotionally charged drag races. After just a few short sentences, people will hate us, call us "stupid" and threaten to use the "dislike button". Yeah, we're walking into dangerous territory!
First up, we have a battle between the Golf R and the Mercedes A45 AMG. Both use 2-liter turbo, but there's 60 PS separating the two. The AMG is also lighter and has an extra gear in its twin-clutch arsenal. However, as the 0 to 100km/h numbers suggest (4.9 vs. 4.6s), there's not much in it.
Off the line, the Golf actually sends power to the rear faster and gets a head start, but the Merc catches up and pulls three car lengths by the end of the race.
The next contender is from Japan, the 2015 Subaru WRX STI. It comes with a bigger 2.5-liter turbocharged boxer engine and had slightly more power. However, its powertrain has a few disadvantages in the gearbox department (only manual or CVT). As a result, it loses convincingly.
Before you start telling us that the driver is stupid, or the Golf R cheated, you should know something. About a year ago, an Audi S3 raced the STI with similar results. It's pretty clear that VW Group knows how to give you bang for the buck.
