Talking to Autocar during the aforementioned event, Ulrich Hackenburghas, VW's research and development chief, admitted that his company is looking into ways of entering the motorsport market, but dismissed the rumors regarding a Formula One involvement.
“There's been no concrete decision (on F1) but we are developing a global 2.0-litre engine for different racing categories,” said Hackenburghas, according to the aforementioned source.
Last week, Stuck talked openly about VW's potential entry in the Great Circle, but underlined the necessity of a “world engine” that would make the opportunity of several other car makers entering the series as engine suppliers more attractive. Investing in developing an engine and not in supporting a factory team is the way to the future, argued Stuck.
“If you're the world's largest manufacturer is natural that we're thinking about [Formula 1], but not before 2012. We're looking for innovative things, and Formula 1 is the pinnacle of motorsport,” said Stuck for Autosport last week. “Building an engine and providing it to a team is the best way,” added the German official, therefore ending speculation that VW is considering a works team in the series.
Neither Stuck, nor Hackenburghas, brought any clarifications what marque from within the VW Group the development of these 2.0 litre engines will be assigned to.
