VW Debuts Small-Displacement Engines for Golf, Polo

There's no doubt small-displacements engines developing decent power combined with very low CO2 emissions and fuel consumption are the main target for most automakers nowadays. And Volkswagen makes no exception to the rule. According to MotorAuthority.com, the German manufacturer yesterday unveiled two new powerplants for Golf and Polo especially aimed at enhancing efficiency of these already-praised for their achievements models.

The two new engines, 1.2-liter petrol and 1.6-liter diesel, are developed on the same TSI and TDI technologies and are said to provide at least the same output as bigger engines, while maintaining fuel consumption and CO2 emissions at the lowest possible level.

Specifically, the 1.2-liter turbo petrol configuration generates a maximum power of 105 hp (78 kW) and 129 lb-ft of torque from 1,500 rpm. The 1.6-liter diesel unit has different outputs, depending on the model, as it follows: 90hp and 105hp (67kW and 78kW) on the Golf and (56kW) on the Polo. All engines are meeting Euro 5 emission standards, the aforementioned source noted.

"The potential of internal combustion engines is far from exhausted,"
Dr. Jens Hadler, VW's head of engine development, was quoted as saying.

Since they will be offered on both Golf and Polo, the new engines can be mated to a six-speed manual gearbox or to Volkswagen's well-known DSG unit.

As we already told you yesterday, Volkswagen Polo is already a hit in Germany, where the manufacturer has received more than 13,000 orders despite the fact that the car is going to be launched next month. The European launch of the car will take place two weeks later than the German unveiling.
