Both SUVs and the Chinese market are very crucial for Volkswagen and its ambitions to become the number one car company in the world. To this end, they decided to combine the two with a brand new concept making its debut at the 2013 Shanghai Auto Show.
Far from being an insignificant car for the local market, the CrossBlue Coupe Concept previews crucial design changes for the company which we'll see introduced in the coming years.

Starting with the dimensions, the SUV-Coupe is quite large at 4,889 mm long, 2,015 mm wide and just 1,679 mm high (for comparison, Touareg: 4,795 / 1,940 / 1,732). It rides on sexy 22-inch wheels and is based around a 2,980 mm platform that pushes the wheels to the corner of the vehicle.

The reason why this car has two filler caps is because it's a "Twin Drive". Under the bonnet is your regular 3.0 TSI V6 turbocharged direct injection petrol engine that from what we understand produces 300 PS (220 kW). It's helped by two additional electric motors (40 kW front and 85 kW rear) that combined offer anther 170 PS for a grand total of 515 PS.

0 to 100 km/h takes just 5.9 seconds, and the top speed is 146 mph. In hybrid mode, with a depleted battery powered by the TSI engine, the CrossBlue Coupé returns 6.9 l/100 km (40.9 mpg), which would make any Touareg owner jealous. However, if it's running the way it should with the battery charged, it returns an amazing 3.0 l/100 km, or 94.1 mpg.

Powered by its battery alone, the CrossBlue can cover up to 33 km/20 miles as an EV.
In E-mode, only the rear electric motor propels the vehicle and the TSI engine is shut off and decoupled, so long as you stay under 75 mph, which isn't exactly slow.

The CrossBlue Coupe is also ideal for longer journeys, as the 80-liter fuel tank gives it a theoretical maximum range of 1,190 km (740 miles).
