In today’s news that isn’t really news, we think it’s the right time for speculation. Earlier this week, SEAT revealed a brand new Leon Cupra, which confusingly is now not one car but two… or four if you count the body types… or six if you also take the gearboxes into account.
Anyway, the new Cupra is an important car for the European scene, since there are so many loyal fans and owners. The 2014 model, technically a Mk3, is now available as a coupe or hatchback and has two stages of tune, either with a 265 PS 2-liter TSI or a 280 PS version. This takes the (intentionally) bragging rights away from the Opel Astra OPC.
Volkswagen has two more compact hot hatches it needs to put on the market in 2014, the first Beetle R ever made and a refreshed Scirocco R. In fact VW has reportedly stopped making the Scirocco R because its engine isn’t produced any more. So, what kind of unit will replace it?
We believe the Leon Cupra 280’s version of the 2.0 TSI will, since it’s got slightly more power and all these cars are designed with front-wheel drive, not AWD like the 300 PS Golf R. We should also see a mechanical slip diff making its way into the formula.
“What kind of performance should we expect?” I hear you ask. Well, the Cupra 280 DSG takes 5.7 seconds to reach 100 km/h and is limited to 155 mph (250 km/h). So yeah, about that much.
I think the Beetle and Scirocco R are more important to US brand perception, so they might debut in New York this April or Los Angeles in November.
