VPG MV-1, Powered by Ford's 4.6l V8

The world's first purpose built wheelchair-accessible vehicle, the so called MV-1, will use Ford's 4.6l 2V EFI V8 engine as a propulsion means, Vehicle Production Group (VPG), the manufacturer of the MV-1 announced today. Ford's engine will be paired with a 4 speed automatic transmission and will come in gasoline and dedicated Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) versions.

VPG says production of the MV-1 will commence at the AM General plant in Mishawaka, Indiana sometimes in October 2010. The vehicle will become the only one in the world built from the ground up to meet the requirements of paratransit.

The car uses 56-inch high and 36-inch wide rear doors, allowing easy wheelchair entrance through a 1,200-pound capacity wide ramp. MV-1 can carry five passengers plus the driver, as well as up to two forward facing wheelchair riders.
