No, we haven't gone mad, we know that the Mercedes-Benz W196 R(ennwagen) is a racing car from the 1950s and 2013 Car of The Year competitions usually feature road-going models introduced in... 2013.
This competition is different, obviously, since it's actually part of the International Historic Motoring Awards, which celebrate the “best of the best” in the international historic motoring industry.

The COTY category gives classic car fans the chance to vote their favorite vintage car from a short list of special vehicles that have filled the automotive headlines during the past year.

Since the Mercedes-Benz W196 Grand Prix car driven by none other than Juan Manuel Fangio became the most expensive car that was ever sold at an auction and it also appeared in public for the first time after it had been hidden for decades, there weren't enough headlines to celebrate its return to the spotlight.

Which is why it's one of the contestants in the run for the Car of The Year category of the 2013 International Historic Awards. You can vote for the car online on until Halloween, on 31 October, with the results being made public on a specially-organized gala in London, on 14 November.
