With fuel prices rising, people are increasingly buying smaller cars and adding the luxury features they need to remind them of the big car they traded in. It’s a natural trend, especially in Europe, where people are much more willing to live with A- and B-segment cars.
But there in lies the problem Volvo has in making a rival for the MINI hatch. MINI started with a globally recognizable car logo and design, and they steadily diversified into bigger cars. Due to the retro styling, they had no problems selling their cars at a premium in the US.
But Volvo doesn’t have retro styling or a well known supermini. The US market isn’t used to a premium subcompact hatch, and the Chinese... well they like their legroom.
That’s why if Volvo really will make a rival for the MINI, it will most likely come after they’ve made new full-size luxury sedans they can sell globally.
